Dear NightFall Astrology readers,
In the intricate realm of traditional astrology, two cornerstones stand out: the principles of sect and essential dignity. Every planet is classified as either diurnal or nocturnal, which contributes to our perception of its celestial role as associated with either the brightness of day or the mystery of night. Further, each planet’s strength or weakness is determined by its position in a particular zodiac sign. This system of evaluation is known as essential dignity.
This article serves as a comprehensive guide to these critical aspects of astrology. We will examine a birth chart through the lens of sect and essential dignity, revealing the delicate interplay between strength and weakness that defines each planet’s influence.
We will begin with an introduction to these basic principles. Then, we will explore the specific classifications of the planets, investigating their inherent strengths and potential weaknesses. Each celestial body has unique attributes; the balance between its power and vulnerability helps shape our individual and collective experiences.
This exploration requires an open mind and a keen eye for detail. Whether you are an experienced astrologer or a newcomer to the field, this deep exploration of sect and essential dignity provides an opportunity to deepen your understanding of the insights that a birth chart can offer.
I. Sect in traditional astrology:
A) General definition and method:
In the realm of traditional astrology, we find an invaluable tool for chart interpretation known as ‘sect’. This concept serves as a compass, differentiating between the more favourable or easier parts of your life, and the more challenging ones. Per your natal chart, these can be considered as the ‘best and worst’ areas/houses.
If you’re well-versed in astrology, you may recognise these as the ‘benefics and malefics’ of the chart. However, if you’re new to this domain, fear not. This exploration will guide you in a systematic way. For this exercise, it will be beneficial to pull up your chart using Whole Sign houses.
The concept of sect fundamentally relies on whether your birth occurred during the day or at night. To clarify, this distinction does not depend on a simple AM or PM demarcation but rather on the visibility of the sun at the time of your birth. To determine this, examine your chart. You have a day chart if your sun lies above the Ascendant-Descendant axis (the horizon). If it lies below this axis, you have a night chart, indicating that the sun was below the horizon when you were born.
There is some ongoing debate about the exact degree below the Descendant that still constitutes a daytime chart. My personal method is simple – if it’s below the Descendant, you have a night chart. Though others may offer different interpretations, this method has generally served me well.
Now, to the heart of the matter. If you were born during the day, the most benefic planet in your chart is Jupiter, while the most malefic is Mars. Conversely, if you were born at night, Venus is the most benefic planet, and Saturn the most malefic.
If you have a daytime chart, the house occupied by Jupiter, the most benefic planet, would typically indicate an area of life where you might expect more ease, abundance, or success. Conversely, the house occupied by Mars, the most malefic planet in a daytime chart, would typically indicate an area of life where you might expect more challenges or difficulties.
If you have a nighttime chart, the house occupied by Venus, the most benefic planet, would indicate an area of life where you might expect more ease or positivity. The house occupied by Saturn, the most malefic planet in a nighttime chart, would typically indicate an area of life where you might experience more challenges or difficulties.
It is important to keep in mind that the ‘daytime sect’ includes the Sun, Jupiter, and Saturn, with Jupiter being the ‘benefic of sect’. The ‘nighttime sect’ includes the Moon, Venus, and Mars, with Venus being the ‘benefic of sect’. The ‘malefic out of sect’ would be Mars for day charts and Saturn for night charts. This tool is especially beneficial for identifying potential areas of success or struggles in our lives.
Remember, each chart has its unique mix of positive and challenging aspects. The aim is not to label something as inherently bad but to understand the possible hurdles we may face.
B) Strengths and Weaknesses of Diurnal Planets:
As mentioned above, diurnal planets, which include the Sun, Jupiter, and Saturn, are associated with the qualities of warmth, light, and dryness. These planets are said to be strong during the day and weak during the night.
- The Sun is considered the most powerful of all the planets in traditional astrology and “is associated with the qualities of creativity, vitality, and leadership. When the Sun is well-placed in a chart, it can indicate a strong sense of self and a natural ability to lead and inspire others. However, when the Sun is poorly placed or afflicted, it can indicate issues with the ego, a lack of self-confidence, and struggles with authority figures.
{ In traditional Western astrology, a planet is considered “poorly placed” or “afflicted” if it’s in a position that inhibits or challenges its ability to express its natural characteristics effectively. Various factors can contribute to a planet being poorly placed or afflicted:
(i) Detriment or Fall: A planet is in its detriment when it’s in the sign opposite the one it rules, and it’s in its fall when it’s in the sign opposite the one where it’s exalted. These placements are considered challenging because they’re not naturally conducive to the planet’s energy (we will discuss this in detail further in the article).
(ii) Hard Aspects: Hard aspects, such as squares (90° aspect) and oppositions (180° aspect), between a planet and other planets can also create afflictions. These aspects can represent internal tensions or conflicts that need to be resolved.
(iii) Combust or Under the Sun’s Beams: If a planet is too close to the Sun (usually within 8.5 degrees), it’s considered combust, and its energy is said to be “burned” or overwhelmed by the Sun’s light. If a planet is slightly further but still close to the Sun (usually within 17 degrees), it’s considered under the Sun’s beams, and its energy is also considered weakened.
(iv) Retrograde: A planet in retrograde motion is considered afflicted because its energy is believed to be expressed in a more inward or unconventional manner.
(v) In a Malefic House: In traditional astrology, the 6th, 8th, and 12th houses are considered malefic or challenging houses. If a planet is placed in one of these houses, it could be considered afflicted. }
- Jupiter is associated with the qualities of expansion, optimism, and generosity. When Jupiter is well-placed in a chart, it can indicate a tendency towards growth and abundance in all areas of life. However, when Jupiter is poorly placed or afflicted, it can indicate issues with excess, arrogance, and a lack of discipline.
- Saturn is associated with the qualities of discipline, structure, and responsibility. When Saturn is well-placed in a chart, it can indicate a strong sense of duty and a willingness to work hard to achieve one’s goals. However, when Saturn is poorly placed or afflicted, it can indicate issues with self-doubt, fear, and a tendency towards depression.
C) Strengths and Weaknesses of Nocturnal Planets:
Nocturnal planets, which include the Moon, Venus, and Mars, are associated with the qualities of moisture, darkness, and coldness. These planets are said to be strong during the night and weak during the day.
- The Moon is associated with the qualities of emotion, intuition, and nurturing. When the Moon is well-placed in a chart, it can indicate a strong connection to one’s emotions and a natural ability to empathise with others. However, when the Moon is poorly placed or afflicted, it can indicate issues with emotional instability, moodiness, and a tendency towards manipulation.
- Venus is associated with the qualities of beauty, love, and pleasure. When Venus is well-placed in a chart, it can indicate a love of beauty and a natural ability to attract and enjoy relationships. However, when Venus is poorly placed or afflicted, it can indicate issues with vanity, superficiality, and a tendency towards self-indulgence.
- Mars is associated with the qualities of action, courage, and passion. When Mars is well-placed in a chart, it can indicate a natural drive and ambition and a willingness to take risks and pursue one’s goals. However, when Mars is poorly placed or afflicted, it can indicate issues with anger, aggression, and a tendency towards impulsiveness.
D) Strengths and Weaknesses of Mercury:
Mercury holds a unique position as a neutral planet. Its temperament and potency are largely determined by its placement within an individual’s birth chart. Known as the celestial messenger, Mercury governs communication, intellect, and adaptability, bridging the gap between the conscious and unconscious realms.
A well-placed Mercury in a birth chart can be a harbinger of several positive traits. It often indicates a lively curiosity, kindling a thirst for knowledge and a deep-seated love of learning. Individuals with such placement may find themselves continually drawn to new information, ideas, and experiences, their minds a vibrant landscape of endless exploration.
Moreover, this placement of Mercury can denote a natural talent for communication, both in written and spoken forms. It can make one adept at connecting with others, understanding their perspectives, and expressing their own thoughts with clarity and precision. This ability often extends to networking, opening doors to fruitful collaborations and relationships across various walks of life.
However, Mercury’s position in the chart is not always beneficial. When it is poorly placed or afflicted, it can manifest as a series of challenges related to its domain. Communication issues may come to the fore, leading to misunderstandings, miscommunications, or an inability to articulate thoughts and feelings effectively. Such hindrances can lead to strained relationships or missed personal and professional opportunities.
Additionally, a poorly placed Mercury can suggest a propensity towards nervousness and anxiety. Given Mercury’s rulership over the mind and nervous system, afflictions to this planet can often manifest as a heightened sensitivity to stress, a tendency towards overthinking, or difficulties in quieting the mind. This can make it more challenging for these individuals to navigate stressful situations or to achieve mental calm.
II. Essential dignity in traditional astrology:
A) The essential dignity scheme (definition):
In addition to sect, planets in a birth chart are also assigned levels of dignity based on their placement in a particular sign. The five categories of dignity are rulership, exaltation, triplicity, term, and face/decan.
Rulership denotes the planet’s regal authority within its ruling sign. It’s akin to a monarch residing in their own castle, where their commands are readily heard and implemented. For instance, the Sun, when in Leo, is at its zenith of power, displaying its characteristics with supreme efficacy. Similarly, other planets rule certain signs: the Moon governs Cancer, Mercury presides over Gemini and Virgo, Venus reigns in Taurus and Libra, Mars dominates Aries and Scorpio, Jupiter leads Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn commands Capricorn and Aquarius.
Next in line is exaltation, where a planet, although not in its ruling sign, still demonstrates heightened effectiveness. Picture a respected guest of honour at a grand banquet. They don’t own the castle but are given significant prestige and attention. The Sun is exalted in Aries, the Moon in Taurus, Mercury in Virgo, Venus in Pisces, Mars in Capricorn, Jupiter in Cancer, and Saturn in Libra.
Then we have triplicity, which refers to a system of rulerships based on the division of the zodiac signs into groups sharing the same element. There are four triplicities, each associated with a specific element: fire, earth, air, and water. Each planet is assigned rulership over one of the triplicities based on its natural affinity with the element associated with that triplicity.
The triplicity rulerships for the seven traditional planets are as follows:
1° Fire Triplicity: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius, which is diurnal, masculine and northern, has as principal rulers in the day, the Sun, seconded by Jupiter, but at night, the opposite. Saturn participates with both.
2° Earth Triplicity: Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn, which is nocturnal, feminine and southern, has as principal rulers in the day Venus seconded by the Moon, but at night, the opposite. Mars participates in both.
3° Air Triplicity: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius, which is diurnal, masculine and eastern, has as principal rulers Saturn seconded by Mercury, but at night, the opposite. Jupiter participates in both.
4° Water Triplicity: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces, which is nocturnal, feminine and western, has as principal rulers Venus seconded by Mars, but at night, the opposite. The Moon participates in both.
Term or bound represents a planet’s dignity within a specific section or degree range (these vary according to different authors) of a sign. Here, the planet’s influence is moderate, akin to a noble residing within their designated territory within the kingdom. An example would be Mercury holding sway within the first 5 degrees of Gemini.
Lastly, the face or decan refers to a planet’s dignity when located in a specific third of a sign. Like the term, a planet in its own face or decan has a moderate degree of strength, capable of expressing its qualities to a considerable extent. For example, the third decan of Cancer (20°-29°) is ruled by the Moon following the Chaldean decans.
In this hierarchy of planetary dignity, rulership stands as the most potent, according to a few authors, as we will see in the next section. However, each level of dignity provides its unique insights, contributing to the intricate and comprehensive understanding of a birth chart in traditional astrology.
B) Strengths and Weaknesses of Planets based on Dignity:
Planets that have high levels of dignity are considered strong and able to manifest their qualities effectively, while planets that have low levels of dignity are considered weak and may struggle to manifest their qualities.
For example, a planet that is in rulership, exaltation, or triplicity is considered to have high levels of dignity and is able to manifest its qualities effectively. A planet that is in its detriment, fall, or peregrine (meaning it has no dignities) is considered to have low degrees of dignity and may struggle to manifest its qualities effectively.
A planet in detriment, which refers to its placement in the zodiac sign opposite to the one it rules, is thought to have diminished dignity. This compromised state can lead to difficulties in expressing the planet’s inherent traits. For instance, Venus, which governs love and harmony, when positioned in Scorpio (the sign opposite to its ruling sign Taurus), may encounter challenges related to emotional vulnerability, trust, and forming deep connections.
On the other hand, a planet in fall is situated in the zodiac sign opposite to its sign of exaltation. This position is considered to undermine the planet’s dignity to a great extent, potentially impairing the effective display of its characteristics. A case in point is the Moon, which is said to be in fall when it resides in Scorpio. This can suggest potential emotional turbulence, mood swings, and lack of emotional steadiness.
The term “peregrine” describes a planet that lacks any form of essential dignity. A peregrine planet is often interpreted as lacking strength or focus, potentially leading to difficulties in harnessing its energies effectively. For example, Mars, the ruler of Aries and Scorpio, exalted in Capricorn, and governing the Water triplicity (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) at night, would be considered peregrine if it is found in a sign where it possesses no rulership, exaltation, triplicity, or minor dignity (terms and decans). This includes signs like Gemini and Aquarius. The presence of a peregrine Mars might indicate a lack of direction or determination in the areas of life associated with Mars.
In traditional Western astrology, both a planet in its home sign (also known as its domicile) and a planet in its exaltation are considered to be advantageous placements. However, they signify different strengths and qualities:
When a planet is in its domicile, it’s in the sign it rules. Here, the planet’s energies are in harmony with the sign, and it can express itself most purely and freely. For example, Mars rules Aries, and thus in Aries, Mars is in its domicile. The planet in its domicile is likened to a king in his own kingdom, able to command and function with full autonomy and power.
Exaltation refers to the sign in which a planet is exceptionally well-placed and its positive qualities are amplified. However, this can also intensify the energy to an extreme. A planet in exaltation is like a guest of honour at a banquet – it is celebrated, and its attributes are highly appreciated. Mars is exalted in Capricorn; its energy and drive are channelled into Capricorn’s structured and disciplined framework. This placement often manifests as strong ambition, excellent strategic skills, and the tenacity to work hard and overcome any obstacles that might stand in the way of achieving one’s goals. There’s a strong sense of determination and a desire to succeed.
Neither placement is inherently “better” than the other; it largely depends on the specific context of the rest of the chart. Domicile placement is about a consistent, reliable expression of a planet’s energies, while exaltation signifies more of an amplification or intensification of the planet’s energies, which can be both beneficial and challenging, depending on the circumstances.
Some astrological texts indeed suggest that a planet in its domicile sign is considered more stable and potentially more beneficial than when it is in its exaltation. This concept is based on the idea that a planet in its domicile is in its own ‘home’ and therefore has more consistent, reliable control over its expression, while a planet in exaltation can reflect more extreme or fluctuating expressions of the planet’s energy. Moreover, rulership is often associated with strong inner qualities, while exaltation is seen as representing a supportive external environment that allows a planet to function optimally.
These positions were expressed in later astrological literature, such as Al-Biruni’s “The Book of Instruction in the Elements of the Art of Astrology” and William Lilly’s “Christian Astrology”, when it comes to Medieval and Renaissance astrology. Contemporary works by Stephen Arroyo, Liz Greene, and Robert Hand further elaborate on these concepts, reflecting a synthesis of astrological thought that has developed over centuries.
Nonetheless, it’s important to remember that this is just one perspective within the rich and diverse tradition of astrology. Different astrologers might place varying emphasis on domicile versus exaltation, and the overall interpretation would depend on the context of the whole chart.
In essence, in traditional astrology, the concepts of sect and dignity play a crucial role in understanding the strengths and weaknesses of a birth chart. By classifying planets as diurnal or nocturnal and assigning levels of dignity based on their placement in a particular sign and house, traditional astrology offers a nuanced and detailed perspective on the qualities and challenges of each planet.
Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of a birth chart can be helpful in guiding personal growth and self-awareness. By recognising our innate strengths and challenges, we can work towards developing our potential and overcoming our limitations.
