Dear NightFall Astrology readers,
“Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think. It’s splendid to find out there are so many of them in the world”, Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery. This is the perfect quote for this week’s energies if you choose to work with the light and not with the dark.
As human beings, we’re “social animals” and are always looking to create long-lasting relationships with like-minded people (our tribe, if you will). However, there are times in life when finding such people can seem like an arduous task. But, we should never fall into despair or give up, for our soulmates/kindred spirits are always waiting for us somewhere, and oftentimes, in the places where we want to look the least. This seeking journey can seem very long, and with Saturn stationing retrograde this weekend in Aquarius (the sign ruling friendship, social circles, and humanitarian action), we’ll get the chance to correct any mistakes we’ve made in these areas. And with Saturn, kindred spirits can also be found at the workplace, large organisations and institutions, or any other large structure. The “you can’t make friends” at work slogan doesn’t have to apply all the time. After all, a successful project does need like-minded people. We have the right to feel fulfilled in all areas of our lives. Remember that.
And, chances are, if you’re a regular reader of mine and resonate with my work, we’re probably kindred spirits, too! Here’s your weekly horoscope.
1. The New Moon in Gemini:
This Monday, May 30th, at exactly 1:30 PM (CET), we’ll be officially done with eclipse season that has brought quite a few shocking events and realisations (all of which have been accentuated by the current Mercury retrograde putting our lives in intro and retrospection). The New Moon at 10° (exactly 9°03’) of Gemini brings new beginnings regarding our communication, local social circles, siblings, mindset, and short-distance travel!
The spirit of cooperation is in the air. And with these “twinning” vibes ignited, your perfect partner-in-crime may already be installed within your very own circle of friends. Need to upgrade your transportation? Start shopping around for your new ride, like an eco-chic electric car or bike (though I recommend waiting at least a week after Mercury ends its retrograde on June 3rd to make any final purchases).
Don’t judge a book by its cover when it comes to love! But definitely peek at what paperback that coffee shop cutie is reading. The New Moon in brainy Gemini kicks up savvy repartee with plenty of witty wordplay thrown in. That’s sure to make anyone swoon under the spell of this sapiosexual new moon. If you’ve been looking for love in all the wrong places, switch it up. Where are the thoughtful, curious, and culturally aware people hanging out? Over the next two weeks, you could meet your match in an online mastermind, the weekend workshop or discussion group. Or they might just be hanging out at your local pub trivia night. Conversation is key to fostering any sort of deeper connections. Coupled? Stop recycling the same “how was your day” chatter. If you don’t have any new subjects to hash out, consider trying something new, exciting and worthy of post-game analysis!
Zooming into the aspects that this New Moon will be making, the magic is amplified with it conjoining the Royal fixed star Aldebaran (often associated with Archangel Michael: the slayer of all evil)! To Ptolemy, Aldebaran was a Mars-type star, and indeed the red giant can be mistaken for that red planet at times, so it is no surprise that it has been much associated with war and military careers, and “The Follower”, as its name translates, can well be taken to imply following in the steps of the celestial general, Michael. The idea put forward by some mundane-minded astronomers that the name means only the star comes soon after the Pleiades star group makes little sense since every star follows some other in that manner. Aldebaran has been in the sign Gemini since 1286 AD, just around the height of the Christian Crusades against Islam, an interesting indicator of conflict between two world schools of thought. Antares, for the other side in the conflict, went into religious Sagittarius in 1272 AD and showed its superiority, perhaps, since the Crusaders never did dislodge the Saracens.
With both the Sun and the Moon conjunct Aldebaran, this promises great energy and perseverance, and high material honours. If the New Moon is aspecting closely (within 2-3 degrees) a planet (especially a personal one: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus or Mars) or an angle (especially your ascendant or Midheaven) in your chart, you will be able to be ahead of other people, will gain a leading position, and will be acknowledged. Also, this conjunction is favourable for business, honour, credit, domestic, public and religious matters.
This New Moon will also be sextiling (harmonious aspect) the Mars/Jupiter conjunction in Aries, creating an extraordinary amount of energy. It is associated with success in war and other competitive areas like business and sports.
However, we should also be mindful of the aspects that the ruling planet (the dispositor) of this New Moon – Mercury retrograde in Taurus – is making. On the day of the New Moon, Mercury will be in conjunction with the malevolent fixed star Algol. The name Algol comes from the Arabic word “Ra’as el Ghoul”, meaning Head of the Ogre. The English translation became Demon Star, with other names being Satan’s Head, and the Spectre’s Head. Ptolemy referred to it as “the Gorgon of Perseus” and associated it with death by decapitation: mirroring the myth of the hero Perseus’ victory over the snake-headed Gorgon Medusa. Historically, it has received a strong association with violence across a wide variety of cultures.
Astrologers, of course, said that it was the most unfortunate, violent, and dangerous star in the heavens, and it certainly has been one of the best observed, as the most noteworthy variable in the northern sky. Algol represents the head of the Gorgon Medusa, who was slain by Perseus. Medusa, who was the only mortal one of the three Gorgon sisters, was originally a beautiful maiden, but her hair was changed into hissing serpents by Minerva in consequence of her having become by Neptune, the mother of Chrysaor and Pegasus in one of Minerva’s temples. This gave her so fearful an appearance that everyone who looked at her was changed into stone. Fixed star Algol is of the nature of Saturn and Jupiter (dignified, pious, conservative, acquisitive, retentive.) It causes misfortune, violence, decapitation, hanging, electrocution and mob violence, and gives a dogged and violent nature that causes death to the native or others.
Algol is the Head of Gorgo Medusa. This name is derived from the Arabic Al-Ghoul, meaning “demon”, “evil spirit”, or “devil”. Derived from the same root as “alcohol.” The dark one has the property of pure Saturn character; the lighter one corresponds not only to Saturnian influence but also to Mars-Uranus-Pluto nature.
As everything has two sides, it has to be said that “high spiritual rays” are emanating from Algol also, but only those human beings can receive them who have already reached high spiritual development. Even then, it has to be noted that those particular persons will have difficulties and obstacles in their way, and they have to use much energy to overcome these handicaps. If their endeavours fail, strong counter forces and enmities will be present.
Fixed star Algol has the nature of Jupiter, but it also has a long tradition as a trouble maker. It is said to be one of the most unfortunate, violent, and dangerous stars in the heavens. This is explained by the fact that Jupiter takes on all of its most perverse meanings: too much heat, as it were, resulting in extremist actions that undo all the beneficial qualities of this planet.
With Mercury, this could be associated with car accidents, heated arguments and quarrels (under substance abuse, for example, which can be amplified with Mercury sextile Neptune), and dark/negative self-talk or thoughts. The square (challenging aspect) to Saturn doesn’t help with the whole pessimistic state of mind either (discipline and patience are our saving grace here). The Mercury/Neptune sextile can also bring empathy and support into our interactions with others, so we should definitely use that instead of wallowing in pain.
Moreover, Mercury will be conjunct the North Node in Taurus: whatever negative news comes out on a worldwide/mundane level, it will have long-lasting effects and most likely concern the economy and natural resources. On a more personal level, you can beat the negativity in your mind and words through love (Venus is the dispositing planet of Mercury and is currently transiting its home sign of Taurus). Before you overreact or erupt into a verbal fight, make sure you’ve gathered all the information about the situation at hand. Mercury is retrograde, remember? This asks us to double and triple check all info we receive and share! This is also a time when you can become an absolutely, outrageously, incredible impactful, just dynamo of a communicator, and you’ll see that your life will move very fast right now, so this is a time when you have to speak your mind! Speak your truth with integrity, though!
Numerologically, 10° of Gemini reduces to a 1, which is linked to new beginnings, the Sun (the life-giving force on our planet), Leo and Aries, adding to the freshness of this New Moon! Keep a healthy mindset and observe the beautiful bonds that will start to unfold in your life! Stay open-minded and curious like a true Gemini!
This New Moon will be felt most intensely by Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. Especially those of you who have your Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven, IC or any other important planet or point in your chart around 10° of these signs (give or take 2-3 degrees).
2. Mercury stations direct:
The coast starts clearing on Friday, June 3rd at 10 AM (CET), when Mercury wraps up a three-week retrograde, pivoting forward at 27° of Taurus. Situations that have been bound up in red tape for the past few weeks could soon get the green light needed to move ahead, albeit slowly. Caution: What seemed like a glittering opportunity a few days ago may lack enough practical value to justify the investment of time and money. (Yes, those pernickety details DO matter when Mercury is in the Bull’s pen.) Do what it takes to break that heat if you’ve been stuck in a stubborn deadlock since May 10th. Perhaps some key information surfaced over the last couple of weeks. Factor it in—the changes you make may be a blessing in disguise.
When a planet is retrograde, it appears to be moving backwards from our vantage point here on Earth. And when it’s in direct motion, it seems to be zipping along in drive. But in between these U-turns is a phase called a station when the planet actually appears to be standing still. Picture yourself waking up from anaesthesia after a successful surgery. You’re dizzy, disoriented and unable to move, yet slowly, the awareness dawns that the procedure is over and healing and recovery can get underway. But that wake-up moment can also be super painful as you return to your body and the sensations sink in. Nurse! Pain meds. NOW! That’s kind of how a station works when a planet ends its retrograde: disorientation fading to awareness.
Also, be mindful that Mercury will remain in its shadow period (the degrees of the zodiac it travelled through while it was retrograding) until June 18th. It’s a bit like retracing steps, which can be a powerful time for integrating lessons that we learned during the retrograde fog—but we may still be integrating the wisdom and unable to rush ahead with clarity.
When Mercury stations direct, you might find yourself:
- Unable to form a decent sentence.
- Sending emails or Snapchats to the wrong person.
- Being wishy-washy and unable to make a decision.
- Forgetting promises…or making ones you can’t keep!
So, stay alert!
Mercury turning direct will be most beneficial for Virgo, Gemini, Taurus, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Libra.
3. Saturn stations retrograde:
On Saturday, June 4th, another social planet joins the retrograde show alongside Pluto. Structured Saturn will flip into its annual, five-month retrograde, a time meant for tune-ups and audits. This year, the backspin goes down in space cadet Aquarius, which can put a halt on anything wildly experimental…or mildly innovative. While you don’t have to halt your mission, do send your inner mad scientist back to the lab. Run more tests before you forge ahead again. Progress can be a double-edged sword, after all. With Saturn in “one love” Aquarius, take time to assess the impact your efforts are having on different communities. Have unconscious biases crept in? Are you using technology ethically and effectively? On a personal level, do you see more effective ways to collaborate with family, colleagues and neighbours? Answering questions like these can elevate all your missions once Saturn powers forward on October 23rd.
This Saturn retrograde will affect most strongly Capricorn, Aquarius, Leo, Scorpio, and Taurus.
Kindred spirits are just around the corner… Can you feel them entering your life?
