Dear NightFall Astrology readers,
I know the year has started on a very (‘very’ is an understatement) slow note. Still, the positive side of retrogrades (currently, we have 3 of them: Mercury, Mars & Uranus) is the opportunity to go back and redo/rethink/revise/fix situations and relationships, the benefits of which will be long-term (Taurus and Capricorn are Earth signs, so stability is guaranteed).
This week’s first Full Moon (in Cancer) of the year, Venus entering genius Aquarius, Mercury’s conjunction with the Sun (Cazimi), and Uranus being involved in quite a few transits set the perfect stage for sudden emotional realisations and breakthroughs! It’s a time for noticing that you need to go back and apologize or fix something (or you might be on the receiving side of that!). Expect sorries and edits!
So, if you’re excited to dive into what we can exactly expect from this week’s astrology, make sure to like & comment on this horoscope, follow me on Facebook & Instagram, and subscribe to my weekly newsletter so you’d never miss an update (they’re all worth it, trust me!).
Let’s dive into this week’s celestial alignments!
1. Venus enters Aquarius:
Traditional romance takes a backseat to chill bonding this Monday, January 2nd, as flirtatious Venus makes an entrance into Aquarius’ lab (and will remain there until January 26-27th). This freedom-loving cycle could inspire you to mix things up from unconventional arrangements to ‘friends-with-benefits’ situations. Single? Aquarius rules technology, bringing a high “clickthrough rate” on the apps. Experiment with blind dates and let friends and coworkers set you up. Attached? Socialise as a couple and strengthen the foundation of friendship in your relationship. Don’t feel compelled to play by the rules if you’re yearning for something a bit outside the lines. From bringing in a “guest star” to planning for a family, the stage is set for exploration and negotiation. You don’t have actually to do any of the things you discuss. Talking about them might be spicy enough during this sapiosexual cycle!
Venus’s trip through Aquarius will be most mind-opening for Aquarius, Gemini, Libra, Aries, and Sagittarius.
2. The first Full Moon of the year: Full Moon in Cancer:
This weekend skies (Friday or Saturday, depending on your time zone) are momentous as the first Full Moon of 2023 glows in its home: warm and caring Cancer (16°22′) on January 7th at 12:08 AM (CET) for those of us who live in Western Europe (yours truly is writing this forecast from Strasbourg – FRANCE).
With all the crazy astrology that’s been going on for the past few weeks (and months, can’t wait for Mars retrograde to be over!), I must say that this isn’t it’s the most intense Full Moon for pivotal world events.
But I will say that it looks very relevant for some financial topics and situations which could be of interest (especially if this Full Moon is happening in your financial 2nd and 8th houses!).
And if you haven’t already ordered your personal ‘Full Moon in Cancer’ mini-reading explaining where and how it’s showing up in your chart and your life, then what are you still waiting for?
So, Full Moons are always about releases, culminations, realisations, and endings. In Cancer (the Moon’s home sign), it’ll revolve around the following topics: home and living situation, family, emotional security, real estate, nurturing and taking care of others, women and motherly figures, and nations/patriotism (a little bit of mundane astrology here).
It’s happening with the Sun in the second decan of Capricorn and the Moon in the second decan of Cancer. The second decan of Capricorn is associated with the three Pentacles tarot card, also known as “The Works card”; it shows a cathedral being built, a work in progress of substantial labour and effort. It suggests that you are climbing the ladder, so it often represents being in progress or working around something.
And then, the Moon is in the second decan of Cancer associated with the three of Cups card, also known as “the Lord of Abundance”, which is a pretty positive card. The three of Cups card is associated with a social dynamic or situation that is very mentally active. It’s not necessarily the most intimate or romantic card by any means. Still, it shows a high level of social interaction, reunions, and celebrations (the 3 women are toasting each other, as you can see).
So, with the Sun in that part of Capricorn exactly conjunct Mercury retrograde (Cazimi) opposing the Moon, it looks like we are highlighting going back and fixing something. It is an ‘a-ha moment’ of “oh my God I need to go back and fix this, oh my God, I need to go back and apologize, oh my God, I have to go back and change something that I was working on in this long-term project or relationship”!
We’re probably discussing or in the middle of thinking about something, and that is where the thought arises. Because of the placements in these decans, I am associating it more with reevaluating a friendship (3 of cups is more of a friendship card), a relationship, or a group project, and either fixing it or closing the door on it.
Even though Cancer is a pretty emotional sign (it starts things through emotions – Cardinal Water), this Full Moon doesn’t necessarily need to be super emotional with Mercury (the mental planet) in the mix. It could bring about though unwarranted apologies. Full Moons are times of energy being released or revealed. So for everyone, it’s will feel like a more emotional purging time of things coming to the surface.
I would say some of the best use of this would be to cry it out, air it out get things off of your chest. Maybe for your chart, it’s not quite as intense because you don’t have placements around the middle degrees of Cancer or Capricorn, but it will still feel like a time of letting go emotionally.
The Moon will be sextiling Uranus; therefore, the Sun will trine Uranus. Positive aspects like the sextile and trine with Uranus show an opportunity for suddenness or ingenuity! So, it does look like a breakthrough! It’s very sudden, and there’s a solution on the horizon. This Full Moon isn’t really making any challenging degree-based aspects, so I’m not expecting this to be a like “Do or Die” very negative time. There’s no anger involved with this Full Moon; it might be emotional, but it’s really about reassessment and apologies.
The Sun and Mercury are about 10 degrees away from Pluto, so it’s not too heavily psychologically intense. Thank God there’s no crisis around it! I like this Full Moon for project-related purposes of deciding to revise or go back and look for problems because you’ll likely have an ‘a-ha moment’ of something that needs redoing or rewriting. This could also be a good time for your relationship: to rethink and resolve any lingering issues.
I know for me, this Full Moon will be very close to my Venus (ruling my 7th house of relationships) in my 9th house of beliefs, and trining and sextiling my Ascendant/Descendant axis. So, I was suddenly contacted on Monday by an old acquaintance/friend to whom I apologised early last year. He accepted it and then ghosted me for the rest of 2022. In a year, my viewpoint (9th house) had already changed around the relationship, so for me, the chord-cutting decision was as fast as his ‘out-of-the-blue’ invitation to his birthday/graduation party.
Anyways, Venus will also be trining Mars retrograde in Gemini. Venus and Mars trining in air signs is excellent for intellectual conversational energy that is more logical rather than super triggered. And with Mars retrograde being involved, it just highlights the going back energy that retrogrades can show of having to redo and reassess.
Finally, this is a wrap-up of whatever situation has started in your life around last year’s New Moon in Cancer that took place on June 29th, 2022!
If you have prominent placements like me around the middle degrees of the cardinal signs, shout out to us, we’ll probably have this more relevant in our charts! But even if you’re not having this particularly personal in your own life, it will still be in your own chart in one area of your life, in the background. So, if you know the Cancer and Capricorn houses in your chart, feel free to comment below with any thoughts about where this might be happening!

Capricorn, Aries, Cancer, and Libra will feel this Full Moon most intensely. Especially those of you who have your Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven, I.C. or any other important planet or point in your chart around 16 degrees of these signs (give or take 2-3 degrees).
3. Mercury trine Uranus:
In with the good news and long-awaited resolutions! From January 7th until January 10th (exact on January 8th), Mercury retrograde in Capricorn will make a harmonious trine to Uranus retrograde in Taurus.
This translates into breakthroughs (yes, this is an ongoing theme for the entire week) in business, finances, and relationships! This is a brilliant aspect that raises your IQ, well, at least for a few days. Great for brainstorming, high-tech, and coming up with ingenious ideas. Managing, planning and organising go fast and receive support.
Spend time with friends and the community. Don’t spend these couple of days alone!
This transit will be most supportive of Taurus, Capricorn, Virgo, Cancer, and Pisces.
Feel the new year’s rush, and go for it (with the “re” prefix in everything you do, of course)!
