The hypothesis that an eclipse might have underscored Jonah’s message to Nineveh, thereby convincing its people to repent, is fascinating. Historical records indicate a significant eclipse, known as the Bural eclipse, on June 15th, 763 BC, potentially aligning with Jonah’s timeframe in Nineveh. This celestial event’s alignment with a pivotal biblical story fuels the argument that divine signs have historically intertwined with human affairs, serving as catalysts for change.
Fast forward to today, and the April 8th, 2024 eclipse is under scrutiny for its purported biblical connections. Moreover, another narrative has emerged, drawing parallels to the biblical ‘mark of the beast’ through a pattern of 6 years, 6 months, 6 weeks, and 6 days between these two significant eclipses. This connection, at first glance, appears to lend itself to the ominous sequence of 666, a number steeped in apocalyptic symbolism.
Upon closer examination, however, the actual span between these eclipses unfolds as 6 years, 7 months, and 18 days. The endeavour to align this duration with the pattern of 6666 necessitates a creative recalibration of the calendar, converting one of the months to 6 and distributing the remaining days to achieve the desired sequence. This manipulation hinges on the selection of specific months—April, June, September, or November—each containing 30 days, to fit within the constraints of this pattern. It’s a delicate balancing act, further complicated by the inclusion of two leap years within this timeframe, which are essential to arriving at the precise formula of 6 years, 6 months, 6 weeks, and 6 days.
The reliance on the Gregorian calendar for these calculations invites scrutiny, given its solar-based structure, as opposed to the lunar-based Hebrew calendar or the Julian calendar, which might have been in use during the time of John the Revelator’s writings in the Book of Revelation. Critically, the Matthew 12 prophecy, which some believe the eclipse aligns with, specifically refers to the resurrection of Christ, not to future signs or warnings. Indeed, Christ Himself tells us when the prophecy will be fulfilled in the next verse in Matthew 12:40, which says, ‘For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly, so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.’ Christ is using what happened to Jonah, being three days in the belly of the whale, to illustrate when Christ will come forth out of the tomb, resurrected. He is telling the scribes and the Pharisees that there can be no greater sign than when He rises from the grave, having overcome death and hell.
The Stellarium-generated graphics below showing the eclipse in sidereal Pisces (27°57′), not Cetus, further weaken the link between the upcoming eclipse and biblical prophecy (see the image below). Furthermore, Fixed Star Baten Kaitos, Zeta Ceti, a binary star in the Whale, or Sea Monster, Cetus Constellation, falls at 21°57′ Tropical Aries and has an orb of 1°30′, whereas the eclipse is happening at 19°24′ of Aries which gives us a superior orb of 2°33′, so there’s no conjunction between the eclipse and this fixed star.
This intersection of astronomy, history, and theology serves as a reminder of our enduring fascination with finding meaning in celestial events. While the narrative connecting the April 8th, 2024, eclipse to biblical prophecy captivates the imagination, it also underscores the necessity of critical thinking and careful analysis.
